울산
Ulsan is South Korea's industrial powerhouse and one of the wealthiest cities per capita in the country. Home to Hyundai Motor Company's global headquarters, the world's largest shipyard (Hyundai Heavy Industries), and SK Energy's massive refinery complex, Ulsan drives Korea's export economy. But there's far more to Ulsan than industry — the city has stunning natural surroundings including Ulsan Grand Park (one of Korea's largest urban parks), the Taehwagang River (home to a famous bamboo forest), and whale-watching opportunities off the coast. For ESL teachers, Ulsan offers higher-than-average salaries driven by the industrial economy, a smaller but supportive expat community, and easy access to Busan and Gyeongju.
Ulsan's ESL market is driven by the corporate sector. Hyundai and other major companies hire English instructors for employee training, offering premium salaries. Hagwons serve the families of well-paid corporate employees, particularly in the education-focused Nam-gu and Jung-gu areas. EPIK positions are available through the Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education. Salaries range from 2.1-2.6 million KRW/month — among the highest outside Seoul. The high-income local economy means schools can offer better packages.
Nam-gu (Samsan-dong area) is the commercial and entertainment center — most expats live here. Jung-gu has the older downtown and traditional markets. Dong-gu is the industrial district near Hyundai Heavy Industries (more Korean, less touristy). Buk-gu has newer residential development and Ulsan Grand Park. The Taehwagang area (near the bamboo forest) is a beautiful riverfront neighborhood. Ulsan is smaller than other metropolitan cities, so getting around is easy.
Ulsan has no metro — buses are the main public transport and cover the city well. KTX stops at Ulsan Station (Eonyang), about 20 minutes from the city center by bus. Express buses connect Ulsan to Busan (1 hour), Daegu (1.5 hours), and other cities. Ulsan Airport offers limited domestic flights. Many residents drive — the city is car-friendly with good roads. Busan and Gyeongju are both within 1 hour by car or bus.

Ulsan is famous for whale meat (historically — now mostly a cultural reference) and gopchang (grilled intestines). The Samsan-dong area has a great variety of restaurants. Jeongja Port has excellent fresh seafood restaurants. Eonyang bulgogi (grilled marinated beef from the Eonyang district) is a beloved local specialty. The industrial workforce means plenty of hearty, affordable restaurants. Ulsan's dining scene is unpretentious and high-quality.
Stroll through the Taehwagang Bamboo Forest — a stunning natural oasis in the city. Visit Ulsan Grand Park for gardens, a zoo, and themed areas. Whale-watching tours operate from Jangsaengpo Whale Cultural Village (Ulsan was historically Korea's whaling center). Hike Gajisan Mountain or Sinbulsan for scenic views. Daewangam Lighthouse Park has dramatic coastal cliffs. The Ganjeolgot Cape is the first place to see the sunrise on mainland Korea — a popular New Year's destination. Busan's beaches and nightlife are just an hour away.
Ulsan University Hospital (affiliated with Asan Medical Center) is the primary facility and provides excellent care. Ulsan Dong-Gang Hospital and Good Morning Hospital also serve the city. Corporate hospitals associated with Hyundai provide additional care options. Standard NHI coverage applies.
Ulsan is very safe. The industrial areas are well-maintained and monitored. The city has a working-class, practical atmosphere. Crime rates are very low. The main industrial safety concerns don't affect residential areas.
Ulsan has a mild coastal climate. Winters are less cold than inland cities (-2 to 8°C). Summers are warm and humid (25-32°C). The city gets moderate rainfall. Being between the mountains and the sea, Ulsan gets occasional fog. Spring brings cherry blossoms, and autumn is pleasant. The climate is very similar to nearby Busan.
