대구
Daegu is South Korea's fourth-largest city, situated in the southeastern inland basin surrounded by mountains. Known as the "Apple City" for its historic orchards and "Fashion City" for its textile industry, Daegu offers a distinctive living experience. The city is famous for its hot summers (earning the nickname "Dae-frika" among locals), vibrant markets, and a strong local identity. Daegu is more traditionally Korean than Seoul, providing a deeper cultural immersion for teachers. The cost of living is notably lower, the local food scene is excellent, and the city's compact layout makes it easy to navigate. Teachers in Daegu often report that the close-knit expat community and genuine Korean cultural experience make it their favorite placement.
Daegu has a healthy ESL market centered around the Suseong-gu and Jung-gu districts. EPIK placements in Daegu are readily available and the local education office is known for being teacher-friendly. Hagwon positions are concentrated in Suseong-gu (the education district) and around Banwoldang in the city center. Salaries range from 2.0-2.4 million KRW/month, but the low cost of living means savings potential is strong. There are fewer international schools compared to Seoul, but Daegu International School serves the expat community. Adult English conversation classes and university positions occasionally open up at Kyungpook National University and Keimyung University.
Suseong-gu is the upscale education district with the highest concentration of hagwons and a pleasant lakeside park (Suseong Lake). Jung-gu (downtown) includes the Banwoldang area — the commercial and nightlife hub. Dongseong-ro is the main shopping street and a popular meeting spot. Buk-gu has a more residential feel near Kyungpook National University. Dalseo-gu (Duryu Park area) is family-friendly with a large park and reasonable rents. Most teachers live within a 15-minute commute of their schools.
Daegu has a clean, efficient metro system with 3 lines covering the main city areas. Buses supplement the metro reaching suburbs and mountain areas. The city is compact enough that cycling is viable in many areas. KTX connects Daegu to Seoul in 1.5 hours and to Busan in 45 minutes. Daegu International Airport handles domestic flights and some international routes to Japan and China. Inter-city bus terminals connect to all major Korean cities.

Daegu is famous for its spicy food culture. Makchang (grilled intestines) and napjak mandu (flat dumplings) are iconic local dishes. The Seomun Market (one of Korea's three largest traditional markets) is a food lover's paradise with hundreds of stalls. Anjirang Gopchang Alley is legendary for grilled intestines. Daegu-style jjimdak (braised chicken) originated here and is a must-try. The Dongseong-ro area has countless cafes and restaurants. Food prices are noticeably cheaper than Seoul — a hearty meal often costs 6,000-8,000 KRW.
Explore the bustling Seomun Market and its famous night market. Hike Apsan Mountain for panoramic city views (cable car available). Visit the Kim Kwangseok Street mural alley dedicated to the legendary Korean folk singer. Palgongsan Mountain to the north offers temples including the famous Gatbawi stone Buddha. Suseong Lake is perfect for evening walks and performances. The Daegu Chimac (chicken & beer) Festival in summer is one of Korea's most popular food festivals. The Herb Hillz botanical garden and E-World theme park provide weekend entertainment.
Kyungpook National University Hospital is the region's largest medical center with some English-speaking staff. Keimyung University Dongsan Hospital and Yeungnam University Hospital are also excellent. Healthcare costs are among the lowest in Korea's major cities. Standard NHI coverage applies.
Daegu is extremely safe. As a mid-sized city with strong community ties, crime rates are very low even by Korean standards. The city center is well-lit and active at night. The 2020 COVID outbreak brought temporary stigma, but the city has long since recovered. Standard emergency numbers (112/119) and the 1345 foreigner helpline are available.
Daegu has the most extreme temperatures of any major Korean city due to its inland basin location. Summers are intensely hot (35-38°C, sometimes exceeding 40°C) — air conditioning is essential. Winters are cold but drier than coastal cities (-5 to 5°C). Spring brings beautiful cherry blossoms along Suseong Lake. Autumn is lovely with foliage in the surrounding mountains. The basin geography means less wind than coastal cities.
