Incheon is South Korea's third-largest city and the gateway to the country through Incheon International Airport. Located just west of Seoul on the coast, Incheon offers a unique blend of port-city character, modern development, and easy access to the capital. The city is undergoing massive transformation with Songdo International Business District — a smart city built from scratch on reclaimed land. Incheon has a rich history as Korea's first port opened to international trade in 1883, and Chinatown in Jung-gu is the country's oldest. For ESL teachers, Incheon provides Seoul-adjacent living at significantly lower costs, plus its own distinct identity. The city hosted the 2014 Asian Games and continues to develop rapidly.
Incheon has a growing ESL market, particularly in the newer developments of Songdo, Yeonsu, and Bupyeong. The city has its own EPIK program through the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education, which is less competitive than Seoul. Hagwon positions are plentiful in commercial districts like Bupyeong and Guwol-dong. Songdo has attracted several international schools including Chadwick International and Cheongna Dalton School, offering premium packages. Salaries range from 2.0-2.5 million KRW/month, competitive with Busan. The proximity to Seoul means some teachers commute to Seoul jobs while living in Incheon for lower rent.
Songdo is the most modern area — a planned smart city with wide boulevards, Central Park (modeled on NYC), and upscale apartments. Bupyeong is a bustling commercial district with excellent underground shopping and nightlife. Yeonsu-gu offers a good balance of modern amenities and residential calm. Jung-gu has Chinatown and the historic Open Port area with colonial architecture. Namdong-gu is residential and family-friendly. For beachgoers, Eurwangni Beach near the airport is popular in summer.
Incheon's metro connects directly to Seoul's subway system via Lines 1 and 7 extension, plus the dedicated Incheon Metro Lines 1 and 2. The AREX (Airport Railroad Express) runs from Incheon Airport through Songdo to Seoul Station in about an hour. Buses are comprehensive within the city. Living in Bupyeong or Songdo, you can reach central Seoul in 40-60 minutes by subway. Incheon International Airport makes international travel incredibly convenient.

Incheon is famous for its Chinatown jajangmyeon (black bean noodles) — some of the best in Korea. Sindorim and the harbor areas offer excellent fresh seafood. Bupyeong Underground Shopping Mall has a massive food court. Korean-Chinese fusion dishes like tangsuyuk are a local specialty. Wolmido Island has seafood restaurants with ocean views. The street food in Bupyeong's night market (one of Korea's largest) is a must-experience. Songdo has more upscale dining options including international restaurants.
Songdo Central Park offers boat rides, gardens, and waterfront cafes. Chinatown and the nearby Fairy Tale Village (Songwol-dong) make for a colorful day trip. Wolmido Island has an amusement park and seafood restaurants by the sea. Incheon's islands (Ganghwado, Muuido, Yeongjongdo) offer hiking and beaches — easily accessible by bus or car. The city has good shopping at Hyundai Premium Outlets and Songdo's Triple Street Mall. Day trips to Seoul take under an hour.
Inha University Hospital and Gachon University Gil Medical Center are the major hospitals. Songdo has newer medical facilities including Incheon St. Mary's Hospital. English services are available at major hospitals. The NHI system works the same as nationwide. The proximity to Seoul means world-class hospitals are always within reach.
Incheon is safe with crime rates comparable to other major Korean cities. The newer areas like Songdo are particularly well-maintained and safe. Port areas in Jung-gu can feel quieter at night but remain safe. Standard Korean safety applies — very low crime, safe public transportation, and responsive emergency services.
Incheon's weather is similar to Seoul but slightly moderated by coastal winds. Winters are cold (-8 to 2°C) with occasional sea breezes making it feel colder. Summers are hot and humid (25-32°C) with monsoon rains. The coastal location means fog is more common than inland. Spring and autumn are pleasant with comfortable temperatures. Yellow dust affects the area in spring.
