Which pays more, EPIK or hagwon?
Hagwons generally pay 200,000-500,000 KRW more per month at entry level (2,300,000+ KRW vs 2,000,000 KRW). However, EPIK offers more vacation days (18-26 vs 10-14) and consistent working hours. When you factor in free time and overtime potential, the effective hourly rate can be similar.
Can I switch from EPIK to a hagwon (or vice versa)?
Yes. After completing your EPIK contract, you can switch to a hagwon by obtaining a Letter of Release and signing a new contract. The same process works in reverse. Many teachers try both during their time in Korea to experience the differences firsthand.
Is EPIK harder to get into than hagwons?
EPIK has a more structured application process with fixed intake periods (February and August), interviews, and document requirements. Hagwons hire year-round with a simpler process. However, EPIK acceptance rates are generally high for qualified applicants (bachelor's degree + TEFL + clean background check).
What about GEPIK, SMOE, and other public school programs?
GEPIK (Gyeonggi English Program) and SMOE (Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education) are similar to EPIK but run by specific regional education offices. They have their own application processes and timelines. The teaching experience and benefits are comparable to EPIK, with some regional variations in salary and vacation.
Can I teach at a university instead?
University positions typically require a master's degree and 2+ years of teaching experience. They offer the highest salaries (2,500,000-4,000,000+ KRW) with the best schedules (12-16 teaching hours/week, long vacations). However, they are competitive and usually require in-country networking.
