The essential apps for living in Korea are: KakaoTalk (messaging, used by everyone), Naver Map (navigation, better than Google Maps in Korea), Papago (translation), Coupang (delivery), Baemin or Yogiyo (food delivery), Kakao T (taxi), Toss or KakaoBank (banking), and T-money (transit card app).
Most apps work with any phone number for basic features, but full functionality (payments, identity verification, deliveries) requires a Korean phone number linked to your ARC. Get a Korean SIM card as soon as possible after arriving — available at the airport or any phone shop. Plans start at approximately 30,000-40,000 KRW/month for unlimited data.
Google Maps works for finding locations, but it lacks accurate driving directions and detailed transit information due to Korean law restricting map data exports. Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for navigation — they are far more accurate and detailed for Korea.
Baemin (배달의민족) has the largest restaurant selection and is the most popular. Coupang Eats is growing fast and sometimes has better deals. Yogiyo is a solid alternative. Install at least two for the best coverage. Average delivery time is 20-40 minutes and meals cost 8,000-15,000 KRW plus 0-3,000 KRW delivery fee.
