충청도
The Chungcheong Region encompasses North Chungcheong (Chungcheongbuk-do) and South Chungcheong (Chungcheongnam-do) provinces in central Korea. Major cities include Cheongju (North), Cheonan and Asan (South), and the special autonomous city of Sejong. The region is Korea's heartland — known for hot springs, historic Buddhist temples, and a relaxed pace of life. Chungcheong people are famous across Korea for their gentle speech and warm hospitality (the regional dialect is noticeably slower and softer). The region is strategically located between Seoul and the southern provinces, making it an excellent base for exploring the entire country. For ESL teachers, Chungcheong offers a genuine Korean experience with surprisingly modern infrastructure.
Chungcheong has a steady demand for ESL teachers, particularly through EPIK programs in both provincial education offices. Cheongju has the most hagwon positions in the region, followed by Cheonan. The proximity to major universities (Chungbuk National University, Kongju National University, Korea University Sejong Campus) creates demand for university-level English instruction. Salaries range from 1.9-2.3 million KRW/month. The region is ideal for teachers who want a balanced Korean lifestyle without the bustle of major cities.
Cheongju is the largest city — Sachang-dong and Seongandong are popular areas with shops and restaurants. Cheonan's Dujeong-dong is the commercial center with good nightlife. Asan is known for hot springs and is growing rapidly. Sejong City is Korea's planned administrative capital, ultra-modern with government buildings. Gongju has ancient Baekje kingdom heritage sites. Each city has a distinct character, from Cheongju's urban feel to Gongju's historic charm.
Cheongju has a small international airport. KTX stops at Cheonan-Asan station (30 min from Seoul) and Osong station (near Cheongju). Inter-city buses are frequent and affordable. Within cities, local buses are the primary transport. Sejong has modern bus rapid transit. The central location means Seoul, Daejeon, and other major cities are all within 1-2 hours. Having a car helps for exploring rural areas and temples.

Chungcheong cuisine features jjim (steamed dishes), dubu (tofu) specialties, and sundae (blood sausage). Cheongju has a vibrant food scene around the downtown area. Cheonan is famous for walnut cookies (호두과자) — a must-buy souvenir. Gongju has traditional royal cuisine influenced by its Baekje heritage. The region produces excellent rice, which you'll notice in the quality of everyday meals. Asan's hot spring area has restaurants specializing in samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup). Farm-to-table freshness is a Chungcheong hallmark.
Visit the Baekje Historic Areas in Gongju and Buyeo (UNESCO World Heritage Sites). Soak in Asan's hot springs (Asan Spavis or traditional oncheon). Hike Songnisan National Park in North Chungcheong, home to Beopjusa Temple with its massive golden Buddha. Explore Suanbo Hot Springs near Cheongju. Sejong City has modern parks and cultural facilities. Cheongju has the world's oldest surviving book printed with movable metal type (Jikji) — the Early Printing Museum tells the story.
Chungbuk National University Hospital (Cheongju) and Dankook University Hospital (Cheonan) are the primary medical centers. Sejong has new medical facilities. Healthcare costs are among the lowest in Korea. For specialized care, Daejeon and Seoul are accessible by KTX.
The Chungcheong region is extremely safe with very low crime rates. The rural areas are peaceful and welcoming to foreigners. Smaller cities mean you'll likely become known in your neighborhood, which adds to the sense of security and community.
Chungcheong has a continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid (30-34°C) with monsoon rains. Winters are cold (-8 to 3°C) with moderate snow. Mountain areas in North Chungcheong get heavier snowfall. Spring and autumn are beautiful, especially in the mountain regions.
