Kang & Kriel Recruitment
강원도
Gangwon Province is South Korea's outdoor adventure playground, stretching along the northeastern coast and across the Taebaek Mountains. This is where Koreans go to ski, hike, and escape city life. Gangwon hosted the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, which brought significant infrastructure improvements. The province is divided by the mountains into coastal (Yeongdong) and inland (Yeongseo) regions, each with distinct character. Chuncheon, the provincial capital, is a lakeside city just 70 minutes from Seoul. Coastal cities like Gangneung, Sokcho, and Donghae offer stunning East Sea views and fresh seafood. For ESL teachers seeking nature, outdoor sports, and a slower pace of life, Gangwon is an exceptional choice.
Gangwon has fewer ESL positions than metropolitan areas, but EPIK placements are readily available and among the least competitive in Korea. Most positions are in Chuncheon, Wonju, Gangneung, and Sokcho. Hagwon positions are limited but exist in larger cities. Salaries range from 1.9-2.3 million KRW/month, but housing is often excellent — many teachers get newer, larger apartments than their Seoul counterparts. The Gangwon Office of Education is known for being supportive of foreign teachers. Smaller class sizes and more personal attention make Gangwon ideal for teachers who want meaningful classroom relationships.
Chuncheon is the largest city, centered around Uiam Lake. The city is compact and walkable with a laid-back university-town feel (Hallym University). Wonju is the second city, more industrial but with access to Chiaksan National Park. Gangneung is the coastal gem — home to Gyeongpo Beach, traditional hanok cafes, and a booming cafe culture. Sokcho is the gateway to Seoraksan National Park. Pyeongchang has Olympic facilities and ski resorts. Most towns are small enough that you'll quickly become a recognized community member.
The ITX-Cheongchun train connects Chuncheon to Seoul in 70 minutes. KTX from Seoul to Gangneung takes about 2 hours via the line built for the Olympics. Inter-city buses connect all Gangwon cities. Within cities, local buses are the main public transit — no metro systems exist in Gangwon. Having a car is a significant advantage here, though not essential. Cycling is popular, especially along lakefront and coastal paths.

Chuncheon is famous for dak-galbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) — the original Dak-galbi Alley is a must-visit. Gangneung has an incredible coffee culture — the Anmok Beach Coffee Street has dozens of oceanfront cafes. Coastal cities serve the freshest sashimi and sundae (blood sausage) in Korea. Sokcho's Jungang Market has famous dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken). Wonju is known for makguksu (buckwheat noodles). Local mountain vegetables (sanchae) are a Gangwon specialty. Food is very affordable throughout the province.
Seoraksan National Park is Korea's most dramatic mountain scenery. Ski at Alpensia, Phoenix Park, or Yongpyong resorts in winter. Surf at Yangyang's Jukdo Beach (Korea's surfing capital). Explore the cave attractions of Samcheok (Hwanseongul Cave). Ride the Gangchon Rail Bike along former railway tracks through scenic valleys. Nami Island is accessible from Chuncheon for a half-day trip. The beaches of Gangneung and Donghae are spectacular. Attend the Gangneung Dano Festival — a UNESCO-listed cultural event.
Chuncheon's Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital is the primary medical facility. Wonju Severance Christian Hospital (Yonsei) provides comprehensive care. Gangneung Asan Hospital serves the coastal region. Healthcare options are more limited in smaller towns. For specialized care, Seoul is accessible via KTX. Standard NHI coverage applies.
Gangwon is extremely safe — it's rural Korea at its most peaceful. The main safety considerations are outdoor-related: dress properly for mountain hiking, respect ocean conditions, and be cautious on icy roads in winter. Wildlife encounters (wild boar in mountain areas) are rare but possible. Emergency mountain rescue services are excellent.
Gangwon has the most dramatic weather variation in Korea. Winters are the coldest in the country — inland areas can reach -20°C, and the mountains get heavy snowfall (perfect for skiing). Summers are cooler than other regions, especially on the coast (25-30°C). The coastal Yeongdong region has milder temperatures year-round but more precipitation. Spring and autumn are beautiful with mountain wildflowers and vibrant fall foliage.
