Kang & Kriel Recruitment
경기도
Gyeonggi Province surrounds Seoul and is the most populous province in South Korea. With over 13 million residents across cities like Suwon, Seongnam, Goyang, Yongin, and Anyang, Gyeonggi offers a suburban alternative to Seoul with lower costs and often better housing. Many Gyeonggi cities are essentially extensions of the Seoul metropolitan area, connected by subway lines and commuter rail. The province is incredibly diverse — from the tech hub of Pangyo (Korea's Silicon Valley) to historic Suwon with its UNESCO World Heritage fortress, and from the entertainment city of Goyang to rural areas near the DMZ. For ESL teachers, Gyeonggi represents the largest pool of positions outside Seoul, with easy access to the capital's amenities.
Gyeonggi has the largest number of EPIK positions in Korea through the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education. Hagwons are abundant in every city, particularly in education-focused areas like Bundang, Ilsan, and Pyeongtaek (near US military bases). International schools like Gyeonggi Suwon International School serve expat families. Salaries range from 2.0-2.5 million KRW/month, generally with better housing provisions than Seoul. Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek has created demand for English instruction. University positions are available at Ajou University (Suwon), Dankook University (Yongin), and others.
Bundang (Seongnam) is the premier suburban area — modern, well-planned, with excellent schools and close to Pangyo tech hub. Ilsan (Goyang) offers lake-side living near the massive KINTEX convention center. Suwon has historic charm with Hwaseong Fortress and a vibrant downtown. Anyang and Gwacheon are close to Seoul with good metro access. Yongin has Everland theme park and Korean Folk Village. Pyeongtaek has a significant international community near Camp Humphreys. Each city has its own character while remaining connected to Seoul.
Gyeonggi is connected to Seoul via multiple subway lines (1, 3, 4, Bundang, Sinbundang, Gyeongui-Jungang, etc.), GTX express rail (A line operational), and extensive bus networks. Most Gyeonggi cities are 30-60 minutes from central Seoul by transit. KTX stops at Suwon, Gwangmyeong, and Pyeongtaek. The province has an excellent inter-city bus network. Many teachers find commuting to Seoul for nightlife and events easy and affordable.

Each Gyeonggi city has its own food specialties. Suwon is famous for galbi (grilled short ribs) — Suwon galbi is considered the original and best in Korea. Bundang and Ilsan have diverse dining scenes rivaling Seoul. Icheon is renowned for its rice and ceramic pottery. Pyeongtaek has international dining options near the military base. Traditional markets in each city offer affordable local food. The suburban setting means more space for samgyeopsal (pork belly) BBQ restaurants with outdoor seating.
Visit Suwon Hwaseong Fortress (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Everland in Yongin is Korea's largest theme park. Korean Folk Village offers traditional cultural experiences. Hike the beautiful trails in Bukhansan and Gwanaksan national parks. KINTEX in Goyang hosts concerts and exhibitions. Ilsan Lake Park is a massive urban park. The DMZ and Imjingak peace park are accessible from northern Gyeonggi cities. Many teachers use Gyeonggi as a base for exploring both Seoul and the Korean countryside.
Each major Gyeonggi city has quality hospitals. Ajou University Hospital (Suwon), Bundang Seoul National University Hospital, and National Cancer Center (Goyang) are world-class facilities. Bundang in particular has some of Korea's best medical infrastructure. Standard NHI coverage applies throughout.
Gyeonggi cities are very safe with typical low Korean crime rates. Suburban areas tend to be quieter than Seoul. Areas near military bases (Pyeongtaek, Uijeongbu) have a more international but still safe atmosphere. Northern Gyeonggi near the DMZ is completely safe for civilian life despite the geopolitical proximity.
Weather varies slightly across the large province but is generally similar to Seoul. Summers are hot and humid (30-35°C) with monsoon rain. Winters are cold (-10 to 3°C) with occasional snow. Northern areas (Paju, Dongducheon) tend to be slightly colder. The Suwon and southern areas get a touch more warmth. Four distinct seasons with beautiful spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage.
