Kang & Kriel Recruitment
경상도
The Gyeongsang Region encompasses North Gyeongsang (Gyeongsangbuk-do) and South Gyeongsang (Gyeongsangnam-do) in southeastern Korea. This region was the heartland of the ancient Silla and Gaya kingdoms, and its historical treasures are unmatched. Gyeongju, the capital of Silla for nearly 1,000 years, is an open-air museum. Major cities include Pohang (steel industry), Changwon (automotive), Gimhae (near Busan), and Geoje (shipbuilding island). The region is industrial yet culturally rich, with a direct, no-nonsense character that locals are proud of. For ESL teachers, Gyeongsang offers proximity to Busan, rich history, coastal beauty, and communities that value hard work.
Gyeongsang has diverse ESL positions across both provinces. EPIK placements are available through both provincial offices of education. Major hagwon concentrations exist in Changwon (Masan), Gimhae, Pohang, and Gyeongju. Salaries range from 1.9-2.4 million KRW/month. Changwon is the largest city outside the metropolitan areas and has a significant foreign community. University positions are available at Gyeongsang National University, POSTECH (Pohang), and Inje University. The region's industrial base means corporate English training demand exists at companies like POSCO and Doosan.
Changwon (merged with Masan and Jinhae) is the largest city — the main commercial area around Changwon Central Station has good amenities. Gimhae is close to Busan with newer development and lower rents. Gyeongju is the "museum without walls" — living here means ancient tombs, temples, and history everywhere. Pohang has a coastal industrial-city feel with POSTECH giving it an academic edge. Geoje Island is stunning but remote. Andong in North Gyeongsang is deeply traditional with the famous Hahoe Folk Village.
KTX stops at Gyeongju (Singyeongju Station) and Pohang. Changwon has excellent bus transit and is 40 minutes from Busan by express bus. Gimhae has its own international airport and light rail connecting to Busan's metro. Inter-city buses connect all cities efficiently. Within cities, buses are the main public transit. Having a car helps in North Gyeongsang for accessing rural historic sites and temples.

Gyeongsang cuisine is hearty and bold. Andong jjimdak (braised chicken) and Andong soju are regional treasures. Pohang has excellent fresh seafood, especially gwamegi (semi-dried herring eaten in winter). Changwon (Masan)'s agujjim (spicy monkfish stew) is a must-try. Gyeongju has traditional Silla-influenced cuisine including ssambap (lettuce wraps). Geoje has fresh raw fish restaurants overlooking the sea. The region is also known for excellent makgeolli (rice wine) production.
Gyeongju is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — explore Bulguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto, Cheomseongdae Observatory, and the Royal Tombs. Visit Andong's Hahoe Folk Village (UNESCO Heritage). Changwon hosts the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival — Korea's largest and most famous spring festival. Geoje Island has stunning beaches and the Oedo Botania paradise island. Pohang's Homigot sunrise watching is a beloved New Year's tradition. Hike the Jirisan mountain trails in western Gyeongsang. The Nakdong River estuary is a bird-watching paradise.
Gyeongsang National University Hospital (Changwon) and Pohang's St. Mary's Hospital are major facilities. Gyeongju has Dongguk University Hospital. For advanced care, Busan's hospitals are easily accessible from most Gyeongsang locations. Standard NHI coverage applies throughout.
Gyeongsang is safe with low crime rates. Industrial cities are well-maintained. Rural areas are very peaceful. The Gyeongsang dialect can sound harsh to newcomers but it's just the regional speaking style — locals are warm underneath. Standard emergency services are available throughout.
The coastal areas have milder winters than inland. Gyeongju and Pohang on the east coast get moderate temperatures year-round. Changwon and southern coastal areas are mild in winter (-2 to 8°C). Inland areas like Andong can be colder. Summers are warm and humid (28-34°C). The east coast gets less monsoon rain than the west. Jinhae's cherry blossoms in April are legendary.
